Overview of the SLE role

SLEs focus on developing the capacity and capability of other leaders so that they have the skills to lead their own teams and improve practice in their own schools. They are are outstanding middle and senior leaders with at least two years leadership experience in one or more of the following:

  • Leadership and management
  • Pupil achievement
  • Quality of teaching
  • Behaviour and safety

Amy has worked at Camblesforth CP Academy for six years as an EYFS/YR1 teacher, recently having returned from maternity leave and now teaching in YR2/3 EYFS. She has been a moderator for 3 years and a leading EYFS teacher for NYCC for 4 years having worked in many schools and settings with NYCC preparing them for HMI visits in her lead teacher role. Amy has experience of delivering many seminars for ‘Selby South’ schools on different elements of EYFS as part of her lead role, as well as supporting School to School work in East Yorkshire.

Ben has taught in EYFS for five years and KS1 for two years, as well as being an EYFS leader for three years and KS1 Phase leader for one year on the SLT at a large three-form entry academy. He maintains close working relationships with LA to develop and improve EYFS networks and CPD across the city, as well as moderating profile outcomes. Ben has led a successful EYFS foundation partnership pilot in conjunction with 4Children and the DfE and contributed towards published research and case studies to develop city wide practice.

Dave has taught across KS1 and EYFS for past 10 years across 3 different primary schools. He is currently Deputy head teacher leading on teaching and learning across the school. He has supported numerous projects as an SLE including supporting KS2 in teaching and learning; supporting new EYFS team leaders in leadership; improving phonics results in Year One; and improving behaviours for learning across EYFS. Dave has a further experience as a Year 2 authority moderator, a Year Two assessment lead and with mentoring and coaching other teachers across KS1 and EYFS.

Lesley has taught in mainstream primary from years 1-6 after qualifying as a teacher in 2002. She is an experienced SENCO in a range of primary settings having led and managed an Enhanced Resource Provision for children with Communication and Interaction. Lesley is currently the Interim Head Teacher at Hob Moor Oaks Academy. She has also worked as a Special Educational Needs Designated Officer (SENDO) for CYC; delivered training for Schools Direct, Pathfinders and in schools; and supported SENCOS in leading EHCP reviews and statutory paperwork systems in relation to children with SEND.

Samantha has been teaching EYs and Key Stage 1 since 1996 and has been been a deputy headteacher in York since 2009. Her current school has been judged as Outstanding by OFSTED (March 2017). Samantha provides curriculum leadership in a range of different areas including providing support with leading on teaching and learning; early years practitioner foundation stage leader tracking pupil progress and monitoring attainment; mentoring and coaching both ITT students and NQTs; SEN support; leadership and management through the role of deputy head teacher, in particular: data analysis, assessment, tracking pupil progress and developing the outcomes for learners.

Andrew has wide ranging experience as a Head of English, Assistant Head and Deputy Head, having taught in and around York for the last 23 years. During his time at a City of York school he led one of the top performing English Departments in the country before moving into the SLT as teaching and learning co-ordinator. Andrew is also a senior examiner with 23 years’ experience working for AQA  and has led on numerous teaching and learning initiatives leading to an ‘Outstanding’ Ofsted judgment.

Andy has over 16 years experience in the Education sector. He’s been a Teacher, Head of Department, Education Consultant for a private education company, an Education Officer for a Local Authority and a Senior Leader, responsible for both Teaching and Learning, and Behaviour.

He led one of top performing English departments in the country from 2004 to 2010, improved A* to C GCSE English results from 59% to 93% and has led on numerous teaching and learning initiatives leading to an ‘Outstanding’ Ofsted judgment.

Chloe has over 10 years’ experience teaching Secondary English; Significant Middle Leadership experience as a TLR holder in English, Head of Department and Faculty Leader Assistant Headteacher in a York Secondary School for 2 years.

Chloe is an experienced AQA GCSE English Language examiner; a PiXL English Associate; a York ISSP Primary Project Co-ordinator and secondary masterclass teacher; and worked as Joint Subject Lead for English for the Pathfinder TSA from 2015-17.

Fay has been a History teacher for the past 8 years as well having Middle Leader experience as Curriculum Leader for History at Vale of York Academy; Teaching & Learning Team experience and being an AG&T co-ordinator at Vale of York Academy.

She has improved P8 measure in History and also Chair of the ISSP Operational Steering Group.

Heather has taught in three different secondary schools and is the current Head of Faculty and associate SLT member in her school. She has improved English results in her current department by 15% in the first year of leadership and is currently deployed as SLE for English improvement in an inner-city York school. Heather’s reach extends beyond this and she has been deployed on a number of other projects inlcluding: Improving provision for English at GCSE; Improving outcomes in Drama at GCSE; Leading coaching programmes for staff; and Mentoring NQTs and RQTs. Heather is also an AQA GCSE literature examiner.

Katherine is currently Secondary Improvement Lead for Hope Learning Trust. She supports headteachers, trustees, governors and staff to continue to raise standards across the secondary phase. She manages the school improvement team and works closely with EborHope teaching school, to support the development of colleagues across the trust. She also works alongside the primary improvement lead for Hope, to ensure high standards across both the primary and secondary phase. She is currently a Director of ELEVATE Multi Academy Trust and Galileo Trust, two successful trusts in North Yorkshire and Redcar and Cleveland.

Louise has taught in secondary schools throughout Yorkshire for 12 years with experience of working in a multi-academy trust, supporting a range of secondary schools (science specialism).

She has redesigned and implemented a new behaviour and welfare system at a secondary school in York which was recognised as exemplary by an independent advisor (SIP) and delivered behaviour for learning and safeguarding training at school and MAT level.

Shân has experience of being an Independent Education Adviser; Diocesan School Adviser; Consultant and Interim Headteacher; LA School Adviser and LA EY Consultant. She is able to monitor, support and develop leaders at all levels as well as offering a deep understanding of Early Years and its place within the whole school context.

Recently Shân has provided support for Interim Headteacher within the Trust in a vulnerable school which resulted in greater stability, the appointment of a new Headteacher and improved outcomes at the end of KS2 in 2018.

Yvonne has been a Science Teacher for 22 years, and Assistant Headteacher for 6 years. With interests in improving teaching and learning. and making progress within Science, Yvonne has always worked in challenging, under-performing schools.

Yvonne has supported on a number of School to School projects since 2015 working with staff and students to improve outcomes.
