Developing Comprehension: word awareness
Facilitator: Nikki Gamble
Words form the bedrock of speaking, listening, reading and writing. This course pays attention to the ways in which we can develop word knowledge for reading and writing in the context of rich language experiences.
Informed by up-to-date research and exemplification from across the primary years, this one day course presents a blended approach to word study. We start with the fundamentals of why vocabulary is important, distinguishing between broad and deep knowledge. We then look at the contexts in which vocabulary develops. Delegates will explore the best ways to teach vocabulary for reading and for writing, and the most effective approaches to teaching spelling. This interactive course will include practical workshops demonstrating games and strategies with a clear rationale.
Areas of focus
- What research tells us about vocabulary acquisition and development
- Language rich experience – not words in isolation
- The structure of words – phonology, morphology
- Etymology – why historical knowledge is useful
- Blended practice – teaching individual words, word learning strategies, word consciousness
- Identifying words for teaching
- Spelling – the skills underpinning good spelling
- Games and resources
