Developing Comprehension Day 2: understanding inference
Facilitator: Nikki Gamble
Day 2 of our comprehension course focuses on the complexities of inference making and critical reading.
We start by building participants’ knowledge of the different types of inference that readers make. We then consider potential barriers to understanding and explore ways in which these barriers can be overcome.
Drawing on research into critical literacies we look at how the transformative nature of reading can help young readers connect what they read with their developing sense of identity, as well as a growing awareness of the representation and potential responses of others.
Areas of focus
- the centrality of inference making to reading
- the range of inferences
- strategies for developing children’s inference making
- planning for effective ‘think alouds’
- representation and critical reading
- focus on comprehension and nonfiction
Note: this is day 2 of a 3 day course. It is recommended that participants enrol for all three sessions to gain maximum benefit However, it is possible to book day 2 and 3 as standalones. Gap tasks will be set between each session and there will be opportunities to reflect on progress and development.
The aim is to build subject knowledge and subject pedagogy.
